Hot Black Sea! Russia Shoots Directly, NATO Exercises War

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaBlack Sea getting hotter. Russia carried out direct fire in the sea during a military exercise Thursday (1/7/2021).

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet said two large landing craft had carried out shooting drills at sea and air targets. This was done after two days earlier Russia reportedly conducted a long-range rocket test.

The live-fire drills escalated the deteriorating situation with NATO at sea. Russia also said yesterday it was tracking an Italian military vessel that entered its Black Sea territory after clashes with British and German warships last week.

Meanwhile, in the same sea, NATO led by Ukraine and the United States (US) held military exercises involving more than 30 countries. This has been done since Monday despite strong protests from Russia.

The exercise, dubbed Sea Breeze 2021, will take place over the next two weeks. It involves about 5,000 military personnel from NATO and other allies, as well as about 30 ships and 40 aircraft.

Ukraine says the main aim of the military exercise is to gain experience in how to maintain multinational peace and security. Ukraine itself has problems with Russia because of Crimea.

The exercises come amid tensions between the West and Ukraine with Russia over Crimea. Russia is said to have annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

President Vladimir Putin’s country claims the waters around the peninsula as part of its territory, including the Kerch Strait at the eastern tip of Crimea. In 2018, Russian troops briefly boarded and took control of three Ukrainian naval vessels as they headed for the Kerch Strait.

Most countries do not recognize the takeover and support Ukraine’s claims to the waters. Ukraine asks for NATO support.

Last week Russia claimed to have fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the shipping lanes of the British warship HMS Defender in the same waters. The country of Queen Elizabeth is called Russia carrying out provocation actions that interfere with sovereignty.

Britain itself rejected Russia’s report on the incident, saying it believed every shot fired was a previously announced “cannon drill” and no bombs were dropped. London added that the presence of its warships there was at the request of Ukraine.

Launch Live Science In fact, tensions between Russia and Ukraine over Crimea have been going on for thousands of years. Since 1954, Crimea has been part of Ukraine because it was ‘given’ by the then leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khruschev.

Politically, this region is close to Ukraine. But culturally, he is close to Russia.

Crimea is rich in food resources. According to government data, more than 50% of Crimea’s economy is devoted to the food and distribution industry.

Crimea is also a popular tourist destination. It is also the landscape of the Russian natural gas pipeline network to Europe in the Ukrainian landscape.
