Hospitals in Gaza Brave Israeli Evacuation Threats as Bombing Continues

10/15/2023-|Last update: 10/15/202308:07 PM (Mecca time)

Hospitals in the Gaza Strip refused to submit to the Israeli occupation army’s repeated threats to evacuate, while Israeli bombing continues to target health facilities, ambulances, and medical teams.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent said that the Israeli army today issued an evacuation warning to the Kuwaiti Hospital in downtown Rafah, and that the hospital administration refused to comply with it.

The director of the Kuwaiti hospital indicated – in an interview with Al Jazeera – that “all those in the hospital are defenseless civilians. We will not leave the hospital except to heaven,” and added, “The whole world has failed us and we will not leave our people alone. The Israeli occupation only wants genocide of the people of Gaza.”

Al Jazeera’s correspondent stated earlier that one of the departments of Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza was severely damaged as a result of an Israeli bombing, after he also received Israeli warnings of the necessity of immediate evacuation.

Regarding the Jordanian field hospital in Gaza, which also received an evacuation warning yesterday, Saturday, an official Jordanian source said that “royal directives” were issued for it to remain in the Strip to treat the wounded and sick, and Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh said that the hospital will remain and will continue to provide its services.

The administration of Al Awda Governmental Hospital in northern Gaza also announced that it had received official communications from the occupation army requiring a complete evacuation of the hospital, including the injured and patients.

An official source at Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City, affiliated with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, said that the Israeli occupation army warned them to evacuate the hospital immediately.

Disastrous situation

In a statement, the World Health Organization strongly condemned Israel’s orders to evacuate hospitals, saying that the forced evacuation of patients and health sector workers would exacerbate the current humanitarian and health catastrophe.

She said in her statement that the lives of many critically ill patients face a critical situation, noting that patients in intensive care units, those who depend on ventilators, women who suffer from pregnancy complications, and others face imminent deterioration in their health condition or death if they are forced to undergo treatment. Moving and depriving them of life-saving medical care during their evacuation.

For its part, the Ministry of Health in Gaza warned on Sunday of the collapse of hospital capabilities in the face of the ongoing Israeli massacres.

The health sector in Gaza is currently suffering from a shortage of all medical equipment and supplies, and finds a surplus only in the bodies of the victims, to the point that the refrigerators for storing the dead are no longer able to accommodate the martyrs.

Hospital beds are also no longer sufficient to receive hundreds of injured people arriving around the clock as the bombing continues, which increases the suffering of health sector workers.

Muhammad Ghoneim, a doctor at Al-Shifa Hospital, said that the necessary tools to deal with this number of infections are not available in the Ministry of Health’s stores, in addition to the threat of running out of fuel and a complete power outage.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Ghoneim warned that it is not possible to perform any surgical operation without an electric current, while the occupation government threatens to take more punitive measures.

The Ministry of Health also called on citizens to immediately donate blood in all hospitals in the Gaza Strip, in light of the continuing severe Israeli raids.

For her part, Palestinian Minister of Health Mai Al-Kaila said that 28 staff working in the health sector were martyred, and dozens of others were injured, during the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Al-Kaila added, in a press statement yesterday, Saturday, that 15 medical centers were damaged as a result of the Israeli bombing, and 23 ambulances were damaged, which were completely inoperable.

Hospitals out of service

According to the Ministry of Health, the occupation army’s attacks led to the evacuation of Al-Durrah Children’s Hospital in eastern Gaza, and patients and staff were transferred to Al-Nasr Children’s Hospital, after it was targeted with phosphorus bombs, which made it out of service, in addition to Beit Hanoun Hospital due to Israeli targeting.

The occupation bombed the Indonesian Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, causing material and human losses. The raids also caused Beit Hanoun Hospital to stop working, and likewise the International Eye Hospital went out of service after it was directly bombed.

International appeals

The Palestinian Ministry of Health renewed its appeals to the international community, the United Nations, and international human rights and humanitarian organizations, to provide urgent protection for hospitals, treatment centers, ambulances, health personnel, and the sick and wounded who are exposed daily to Israeli bombing.

In turn, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said earlier that the occupation army’s demand that hospitals evacuate is a new crime, and reflects hidden criminal intentions against the Gaza Strip to prevent basic and emergency health services. The movement called on the United Nations and relevant international institutions to intervene urgently to stop Israel from its plans. Criminal attacks targeting hospitals, medical staff, and other institutions working in the humanitarian field.

The Palestinian Red Crescent called on the international community to intervene to stop the Israeli decision to evacuate Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza, and the UNRWA advisor in Gaza called on Israel to stop forced evictions and stop its warnings to hospitals.

As the war entered its ninth day, the Israeli bombing of Gaza resulted in the death of 2,329 Palestinians and the injury of 9,024 others.
