Horner: ‘Albon could be the surprise of the season’

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is confident Alexander Albon can become ‘the surprise of the season’. According to Horner, the Thai is coping well with the pressure and the team therefore expects to make progress this year.

Albon started in Toro Rosso in 2019 but was allowed to step into the Red Bull in Spa-Francorchamps because of the disappointing results of Pierre Gasly. “People soon forget that this is only his second season in Formula 1,” Horner said in conversation with The Race. “He also kind of missed the first part of last season. It was a baptism of fire, but he handled it incredibly well, ”said the Red Bull team boss.

What Horner especially notices is how well Albon handled the pressure. “He seems to be handling the pressure very well and we expect to make progress this year,” said Horner. “I think there are opportunities for him and he could be the surprise of the season in many ways,” the Briton concludes.

Less preparation time
Albon himself is looking forward to the season opener in Austria: “I feel good. All drivers will feel insecure about what’s going to happen because there has been so much time between them. ” According to Albon, the main thing is that the teams get into racing rhythm quickly. “We have less time to prepare, unlike a normal weekend where we would do some work in the simulator. There will also be circuits we have never been to before, but that offers opportunities ”, says the Thai.

“I think the good teams and drivers will be flexible and will quickly understand the car and the tracks,” Albon continues. “I think that we as a team will be quite successful in this,” he concludes.
