Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg (Volume 1) – review and opinion about the comic [Egmont]

Horizon Zero Dawn turned out to be a gigantic success, which was expanded very quickly: a board game, rich in additions, appeared on the market, new players, thanks to the PC edition, got to know Aloy’s adventure, and at the same time comics made their debut. The stories compiled by Anna Toole were created just after the announcement of Horizon Forbidden West, thanks to which readers could basically count on expanding the announcement, because the comic book “Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg ”extends the trailer that we saw in June 2020 in an extremely interesting way. In the world created by Guerrilla Games, a new threat has appeared that literally everyone will have to face.

However, Aloy is not the main character of Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg ”. We meet the protagonist of Horizon Zero Dawn when the aforementioned girl sets off on a mission – the one we will experience in Horizon Forbidden West at the beginning of 2022. Anne Toole focused on a completely different character – we’ve already seen Talanah Khane Padish on the PS4 adventure, and this is what the events in the reviewed comic focus on. Was it a good choice? Honestly, I was counting on more Aloy, who I became very close to during the first story, but Talanah didn’t disappoint – and she faced a very difficult task.

The creator of the Horizon Zero Dawn story not only had to introduce new readers to Horizon, but also encourage players who had the opportunity to see the production debuting on PlayStation 4 to the events. It was not an easy task and was partially completed, because we receive a lot of additional descriptions of the world, events that took place much earlier, heroines, tribes or machines, but in the end there were no more details prepared for recipients who already know this world.

The story of “Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg ”focuses on the character of Talanaha, who is looking for his mission and cannot find himself in the world after the action with Horizon Zero Dawn. However, the emerging new threat makes the girl forget about her problems for a moment and focuses on overcoming the current threats. The author unnecessarily involved an additional character in the whole plot, whose story somehow affects the entire story – the moments when the action focuses on the main character or machines are definitely more interesting. Ann Maulina portrayed the image of Aloy’s opponents particularly well, although in my opinion the adopted line looks great and quite effectively shows the atmosphere of IP created by the Dutch studio. While reading the comic, I had the impression that the scriptwriter wanted to include far too many threads in one story, and in the end everyone was only “slightly licked” … Moreover, events dominate that not everyone has to like, because their message is too universal and not necessarily this is exactly the type of adventure you might expect from Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg ”.

The story does not lack the thread related to the Hunter’s Lodge, which has great potential for expansion in the next installments. The creator has also not forgotten about the duels, which give the events dynamics and look really decent – for players, scenes in which the heroine uses known tactics to defeat her opponents are particularly pleasant. Until Anne Toole in the future (in subsequent comics) should not omit additional events related to other groups of hunters, and this information would be especially valuable when expanding the knowledge about the universe created by Guerrilla Games – in “Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg ”, there is a modest thread related to it, but it is only an addition to the main meat.

Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg (Volume 1) - review 2 - Aloy appears in the story

In Horizon Zero Dawn. Raróg “I like the little flavors that were already presented in the first trailer of Horizon Forbidden West and show that in the future, thanks to the next comics and the game, we will be able to immerse ourselves deeper into the post-apocalyptic world – we can already see the great Mussel here (a machine hiding underground and having plants on its back), moreover, Aloy rides one of the metal beasts.

The comic somewhat heralds new events and prepares for the next game by Guerrilla Games, but I hope that the next volumes will definitely focus more on the action and the main plot – this time the writer took the “side paths” too much, referring to smaller stories, which probably will not prove very important to Horizon Forbidden West. However, if you are looking forward to the next production of the Dutch team, the first volume of the comic can decently prepare you for the upcoming adventure … Although I still hope that the best is yet to come.
