«Hopefully Wolf will notice that he lives better in the forest than in the settlement»

Young animal has got lost

A father was waiting for his daughters in Giswil on Saturday afternoon. Then he saw something and didn’t believe his eyes: A wolf calmly walked past him in the middle of Giswil.

  • At least six people have spotted a wolf in Giswil OW.
  • An expert from the canton also saw the wolf with his own eyes.
  • It could be a young wolf that got lost.

Benno Wolf from Sarnen waited for his children in his car in front of the multi-purpose hall in Giswilauf at around 11.20 a.m. on Saturday until they had finished their ski training to drive them back home. What he then saw should be unique in his life: “Suddenly I saw a wolf coming towards me.” The eyewitness picked up the phone and informed the police of his sighting. As a result, the Obwald nature overseer Eugen Gasser was called in, who is responsible for the municipalities of Lungern, Giswil and Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden.

The gamekeeper would have been happy to see a lot of feces

This sighting was also a surprise for Gasser: «I saw a wolf for the first time. It was an experience to watch him. » The animal was seen at about six different locations, and a group of young people had seen it in front of the multi-purpose hall. According to Gasser, wolves cover very long distances. He suspects that the wolf came from the east and went west. “I saw a healthy animal that was walking purposefully in its habitat,” continues Gasser. The gamekeeper would have been delighted if he had found the wolf’s droppings: “Then it would have been possible to have his DNA determined.” According to Gasser, this could have been used to determine which pack he came from. But what pleased him: “Nobody who had spotted the wolf was angry because of it.”

For David Gerke, President of the Wolf Switzerland Group, the sighted animal is a young wolf: «This is recognizable because he does not yet have a pronounced body. This is also evident from the color of the fur and the drawing. In addition, the fur still looks fluffy. » According to Gerke, the wolf was born in spring 2019. Now he has left his pack and is looking for a new suitable area to live in and for a partner. Gerke: “It is normal for young wolves to be out in spring. But he wasn’t specifically looking for closeness to people. » A young wolf is curious and not shy. Because he did not know the area, it was possible that he got lost and therefore got into the settlement. “He is now making his experiences and hopefully has noticed that he lives better in the forest than in a settlement,” continues Gerke.
