On the same day as the opening of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (October 16), residents of Hong Kong in the United Kingdom launched an operation to surround the CCP consulate in Manchester to protest the re-election of Xi Jinping; it is widely believed that Xi Jinping will win a third term at the helm after the 20th National Congress.
Hong Kongers erected several protest banners outside the consulate in Manchester, one of which read:Heaven destroys the CCP“, and one that reads” Mother He Qu “.
Greater Manchester police said around 30-40 people had gathered outside the Chinese consulate. “Shortly before 4pm, a small group of men emerged from the (Chinese consulate) building and a man (protesting in Hong Kong) was dragged into the consulate and attacked,” the police statement read.
“Fearing for the safety of the man, our police intervened and the victim was removed from the consulate”.
According to a video released by the BBC, a protesting man wearing a black hat was dragged through the consulate gate. He lay on the ground, was kicked and beaten by five men. British police rushed several times throughout the trial: “robbing people”.
Before the British police entered the consulate and pulled out the Hong Konger, a white-haired man in a dark blue cap, glasses, mask and scarf could also be seen grabbing the Hong Konger’s hair. Free Asia reported that there was news at the scene that the man was Zheng Xiyuan, the Chinese consul general in Manchester. Free Asia sent a letter to the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester to find out, but has not yet received a response.
British police said in a statement that the man, in his thirties, was treated overnight in hospital with multiple injuries. No arrests have been made and Sheriff’s assistant Rob Potts said a full investigation into the case is underway.
Alicia Kearns, a British Conservative MP and chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, suggested that the British government should summon the Chinese ambassador to expel or prosecute Chinese officials who beat up protesters.
A spokeswoman for British Prime Minister Liz Truss said the reports were “deeply troubling”.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the media on Monday that he was unaware of the situation, but said that “the Chinese embassy and consulates in the UK always respect the laws of the host country”.
