Honduras Faces Alarming Rise in Omicron Variant Cases and Insufficient Vaccination Coverage

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS.- The behavior of the subvariant XBB.1.15 and XBB 1.5 of omicron that circulates in the Honduran territory is high in terms of positivity and the level of protection is scarce. According to official data, only 84,425 Hondurans are immunized against this condition (with the bivalent vaccine).

This coverage figure, according to health experts, is negligible, which would explain that Honduras went from 1% positivity to 15% in less than a month.

To stop this increase, health experts asked the population to apply the dose of the bivalent vaccine, which is “free and is in all health centers and public hospitals in the country.”

This variant is deadly and not easy to detect, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

This new variant found the Honduran population without vaccines or reinforcements to lessen its effects.

Data from the Ministry of Health (Sesal) analyzed by EL HERALDO show that 5,760,184 Hondurans have the complete vaccine schedule (two doses) against covid-19.

While of the booster doses, which are the most important for this type of scenario, they have only been applied to 4,716,117 people.

As for the bivalent, of those 84,425 Hondurans who have applied it, the majority are from Francisco Morazán, Cortés, El Paraíso, Choluteca and Valle.

Likewise, the regions with the highest vaccination coverage are La Paz, Choluteca, El Paraíso, Valle and the Metropolitan District of the Central District.

Given this rebound in covid-19 cases, the health authorities call on the Honduran population to be vaccinated against the new omicron sublineages and to complete the vaccination scheme.

Dr. Pamela Olivera, coordinator of Sesal’s covid-19 Surveillance, stated that the bivalent vaccination rate is “extremely low.”
