Honda’s MotoGP Decline Linked to Disregarding Input from Past Riders, Marquez Focused

Jakarta

Honda is slumping again in MotoGP. It has been four seasons since they were able to win the world title. It is said that Honda’s destruction in MotoGP was because they did not listen to input from previous racers, such as Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow. In its glory days, Honda only wanted to listen to Marc Marquez’s advice.

Honda created a deadly combination with Marc Marquez. This Japanese manufacturer dominates the championship title in the modern MotoGP era. Since the MotoGP 4-stroke engine was introduced in 2002, Honda has won at least 10 MotoGP titles, of which 6 were won with ‘The Baby Alien’ Marc Marquez.

In fact, Honda and Marquez were so strong that they won four MotoGP titles in a row, from the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. No wonder they felt proud and felt they would be untouchable by their competitors. However, this arrogant attitude was a disaster, now Honda is in decline, and Marquez even left for Ducati.

Former Repsol Honda manager, Livio Suppo, said that Honda’s declining performance in MotoGP was because they were too focused on Marquez. Other riders, such as Dani Pedrosa or Cal Crutchlow, don’t listen to their suggestions and input.

“You will remember some of Cal’s interviews, which were not very good about his bike. Dani also complained – not in public – but in technical meetings. He said that the Honda motorbike was becoming increasingly difficult to ride,” said Suppo in an interview with Crashquoted on Sunday (21/1/2024).

But because Marquez appeared gacorwon the title in 2018 with nine wins, then 12 wins when winning the title in 2019, Dani and Crutchlow’s input was no longer listened to.

“Of course Marc’s talent is very helpful. And maybe one of the mistakes was that Honda at that time didn’t listen to (suggestions) from riders like Cal and Dani,” said Suppo.

“They didn’t really care about other riders’ results, they just focused on Marc winning, winning, winning. And this was probably the biggest mistake. Then when they realized it, which basically happened at the same time as Marc’s crash (in 2020), it was too late, Suppo added.

When Pedrosa and Crutchlow retired, they each became test riders for the KTM and Yamaha MotoGP teams. “Of course I was very surprised to find out that (Honda) did not offer Dani as a test rider. Even though Dani has high sensitivity (to motorbikes),” said Suppo.
