Home Alone is not a happy story. Cruel death, sadistic tendencies and trouble with the law

Home Alone, like its second installment, Kevin Alone in New York, are Christmas classics and we won’t argue about that. However, we decided to suck some Christmas magic out of them and the most famous productions with their participation Macaulay Culkin take it a little more seriously. Both filmy telling of Kevin McCallister (Culkin) accidentally left to fate by lackluster guardians, hide many criminal trivia.

Kevin’s parents may be in serious trouble with the law

In the first part of the ongoing Christmas hit Christmas in Paris, the McCallisters leave an eight-year-old boy at home. Due to excessive sleep and a huge rush, Kevin’s parents (Catherine O’Hara, John heard) not only did they not check if their son was on the bus taking them to the airport, but they didn’t even make sure that he had a ticket, he passed the check-in without problems and is sitting in his seat on the plane. Thus, they committed a crime, at least in the light of Polish law. According to Dr Joanna Machlanska, a criminal law attorney, Kate and Peter McCallister exposed the child to health damage.

From the point of view of Polish criminal law, Kevin’s parents unwittingly exposed him to imminent danger of grievous bodily harm by negligence, which constitutes a crime under Art. 160 § 3 in relation to § 2 of the Criminal Code – explains the lawyer in a post on Instagram.

Not the McCallisters, of course baby deliberately, they alerted the police and tried to contact Kevin (phones stopped working). Dr Machlańska, however, believes the boy’s parents may have trouble proving that they have gone to great lengths to ensure his safety.

I don’t think they have done enough. They could still go to the US embassy in Paris, to the police in Paris, to call friends and relatives,” he adds.

Thieves would have little chance of survival

Although as children we laughed out loud at the thieves tortured by Kevin’s traps (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern), the truth is that probably none of them would survive a visit to the McCallister house. A group of doctors and nurses analyzed it by commenting on the video on the Distractify YouTube channel, and the examples can be multiplied. After falling down the stairs, Marv would not be able to get up and likely end up with broken ribs and kidney injuries. Burning Harry’s head would have resulted in second-degree burns, extremely painful blisters, and burned skin and even flesh to the bone. And after being hit by a can of paint, his friend would not only lose his teeth, but he would most likely also die pretty quickly from a stroke. We don’t even want to think about the amount of blood that should have flowed from the McCallister house…

Is Kevin a dangerous sociopath?

With any luck, Harry and Marv would end up with nothing but serious injuries in the break-in attempt, but there’s a very good chance they’ll die. Under the law — in both Poland and Illinois, where the McCallister home is located — an eight-year-old child cannot be prosecuted for such an act. However, many “Home Alone” viewers are convinced that the boy who, aware of the bandits’ plan, sets death traps in the house instead of informing the police, is doing it for sadistic pleasure. Although it may seem that this Christmas comedy everyone loves it, there are many people who hate the “Kevin” series just because of the brutal violence. There are entire threads devoted to this topic including: on Reddit, and many parents who watched the Christmas blockbuster years ago, won’t let their kids watch it today.

And that’s not all. There is even a theory linking ‘Home Alone’ with the horror series… ‘Saw’. It shows that Jigsaw, a serial killer who killed people by setting death traps for them, is an adult Kevin, scarred by childhood traumas. If you think about it, it doesn’t seem so absurd…

The film became the inspiration for a true crime

In the second part of the Christmas blockbuster, a pair of delinquents come up with the idea of robbing a toy store. Harry and Marv hide out in the toy houses on display during the day, deciding that once all the employees have gone home, they will leave their hiding place and pull the money out of the till. Burglars in the UK have devised a similar scheme by disguising themselves as mannequins in the Beales department store in Worthing.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the situation took place in 2016 and left the local police dumbfounded. The thieves somehow managed not to set off the alarm and left the shop, taking clothes worth around £10,000 in total. We don’t even know how they got in. One of the employees told a tabloid that the mannequin-suited thieves must have been completely still for a long, long time.

Kevin also has a counterpart

In real life, there was not only a crime similar to the one in the film, but also a similar reaction from the child. It didn’t take long for the American boy to notice that someone was trying to burglarize his house. As NBC reported, 11-year-old Chris was alone when he heard a noise upstairs. Although, as he later reported, he was terrified, he grabbed a knife and tackled the thief. When the thief threatened to kill him and the boy noticed the man was armed, he managed to take a gun belonging to his stepfather himself. Without hesitation, he fired a warning shot, which startled the attacker, who started to run away. Chris fired a total of 12 shots at the thief, the last one wounding him in the leg. The man was caught by the police and taken to hospital.

An internet prank has alerted the police

This story is actually more funny than scary, but it also required the intervention of the services. Around 2016, the same joke started circulating on Facebook groups. Internet users posted a photo of the bandits from the Kevin series, alerting residents that a pair of burglars robbing houses was prowling in the area.

These two men are moving around Littleborough, knocking on doors claiming to be water workers and asking to be allowed in to check for leaking taps. Don’t let them in! the post said.

While for “Home Alone” fans the joke is obvious, a large group of people who reported the matter to the police must have fallen for it. UP wit representatives of the British services reacted, straightening out in a Facebook post that it was fake news. By the way, however, they emphasized that there is a certain moral in this joke and in such situations it is really better to be careful, and it is better not to trust unfamiliar people into the house.
