Suka NASA said in a press releaseA medical team of holograms was “transported” on the International Space Station late last year, making them the first people to have a hologram projected into space using technology from Microsoft and a startup called AEXA Aerospace.
“This is a completely new way of human communication over great distances,” said NASA flight surgeon Dr. Joseph Schmid, one of the doctors on the team sent to the International Space Station, said in a statement. “Besides, this is a completely new way of human exploration, in which our humans can travel far from the planet.”

Using a Microsoft Hololens Kinect camera and a computer equipped with AEXA software, Dr. Schmid and the rest of the Earthbound team were able to chat with European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Thomas Pesquet while on the International Space Station.
In addition to holographic technology, AEXA is also interested in developing augmented reality and virtual reality software, which could mean “holodes” like those on many iconic Star Trek ships could soon become a reality.
