On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God – Joy of All Who Sorrow. The icon depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by people overwhelmed by ailments and sorrows, as well as angels doing good deeds.
The history of the icon dates back to 1688. The event happened in the Transfiguration Church in Moscow, when she contributed to the healing of the sister of Patriarch Job of Moscow. According to legend, praying to the Mother of God and asking her to get rid of the disease, Euphemia heard a voice prompting her to go to church. After a prayer service over the icon, the Patriarch’s sister was cured.
Traditions and rituals
From that day, girls’ winter gatherings began, the girls were engaged in handicrafts for sincere conversations and quiet singing. Since all this took place in the light of a torch, the day began to be called the Light.
On this day, our ancestors always prayed to the icon of the Sorrowful Mother of God and asked her to protect them from sorrow and disease.
