Holiday season brings more travelers to Schiphol Airport | NOW

Because it is a holiday and previously introduced travel restrictions by governments have been lifted, the number of travelers who traveled via Schiphol in July has increased compared to the previous months. In July this involved 1.3 million travelers, compared to less than 500,000 in June.

This is evident from the transport figures published by the airport on Friday. Compared to July last year, the number of travelers was still 80 percent below the level of the same month last year.

The number of flights was 65 percent lower and thus came to 15,700. The number of cargo flights doubled compared to July last year to 2,336.

At the beginning of last month, some 28,000 people traveled via Amsterdam airport, by July 31 that number had risen to approximately 58,500. According to Schiphol, compared to the previous months, more people traveled to typical holiday countries such as Spain, Italy, France and Portugal.

Even so, passenger numbers were still nearly 60 to 75 percent lower than last year. This picture is even stronger for distant destinations. 90 percent fewer travelers went to China, the United Arab Emirates and the US.

Schiphol expects the upward trend to continue this month. “Schiphol currently expects to be able to welcome between 65,000 and 80,000 passengers per day at the end of August.”
