Historical decision: Now you will soon no longer be able to shift yourself

EU emissions requirements are becoming increasingly stringent. Among other things, this means that the world’s car manufacturers are increasing their investment in electric cars, in order to reduce local emissions quickly.

Failure to meet EU requirements will result in huge fines.

The development of new electric cars also costs large sums, which is why car manufacturers are cutting what they can at all stages of production.

Mercedes is among many who have to come up with the saving knife. Already by 2022, the parent company Daimler will get rid of several thousand employees.

End of manual gearboxes

Now it is also clear that Mercedes has made a historic decision, to cut out the manual gearboxes on their cars. This is one of many measures to reduce production costs.

The manual gearboxes should not be scrapped overnight, but will be slowly but surely phased out in the coming years. The measure is one of several that will contribute to a cost cut of around 20 percent by 2025.

Sales of manual gearboxes at Mercedes have declined in recent years. Last year, they delivered around 300,000 cars with manual transmission. In just four years, there is a decrease of 200,000 units, writes the Swedish website The world of technology.

In the USA, Mercedes has only delivered cars with automatic transmission since 2015.

Today, it is mainly A-Class and B-Class that are still delivered with a manual box among the passenger cars. This will soon be the end of it – also for the compact models.
