More than 170,000 serious crimes were reported in New York City last year, according to the latest report from the police department. These are the highest figures since 2006 when the statistics began to be made public. Many residents say they no longer feel safe.
“I was coming home from work on the train and I fell asleep, I was tired and when I woke up I no longer had my bag, the waistbands on it were torn, all my documents were lost,” says Steven, a New York resident.
Crimes such as car and property theft, strangulation and possession of dangerous weapons have increased by more than 20% compared to 2021. Armed violence and crimes on the train have been the priorities to combat by the local government.
