Historic Coalition in Ireland | SN.at

The new Irish government stands more than four months after the general election. The bourgeois parties Fine Gael and Fianna Fail and the Greens adopted their negotiated coalition agreement in a ballot on Friday. Fianna Fail boss Micheal Martin is to be elected new prime minister on Saturday. The government program is strongly characterized by environmental goals.

The Greens were the tip of the scales. They accepted the deal with 76 percent. The office of head of government will rotate between the two major coalition partners. According to Martin, Fine Gael boss Leo Varadkar is set to become prime minister again in late 2022.

The Irish broadcaster RTE spoke of a “historic coalition”. Political rivals Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have dominated Irish politics since independence a century ago. It is the first time that both parties have entered into an alliance.

In the parliamentary election on February 8, the left-wing party Sinn Fein surprisingly knocked the two bourgeois parties off the throne. This marked the end of the two-party system and a political upheaval in Ireland. Varadkar has previously led a minority government tolerated by Fianna Fail.

A collaboration with Sinn Fein, which had scored points in the election with socio-political demands, strictly excluded Varadkar. Sinn Fein was formerly a political arm of the underground organization IRA (Irish Republican Army) and is committed to the reunification of Ireland. The party was outlawed for a long time. Even today, critics accuse Sinn Fein of having blood on her.
