Hispanic stores in Charlotte favored with refrigerator program

Charlotte, NC.- The Mecklenburg County Food Safety Public Health (MCPH) program installed a sixth refrigerator in a Charlotte Hispanic store as part of the pilot program through the Healthy Corner Store initiative

The Fruteria El Barrio #2 store, located at 1401 Eastway Drive, was another favored with the refrigerator that will help make fresh fruits and vegetables available to residents who live in food deserts or who may experience food insecurity.

IMPORTANCE

“Our collaboration with corner store owners helps close critical gaps in equitable access to healthy food for our Mecklenburg County residents,” said Emma León, health policy coordinator for the Office of Policy and Prevention. of Chronic Diseases, who leads the initiative.

Food security is the ability of a household to access nutritious food, which contributes to an active and healthy lifestyle. Nearly 15 percent of households in Mecklenburg County are considered food insecure.

In 2021, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners made addressing food security a priority and allocated resources to expand programs that provide healthier food in food insecure places, including in Public Health priority areas.
