MWC 2024: Highlights from the Mobile World Congress

Published on [Current Date]

Mobile World Congress—or just MWC—isn’t one of our favorite trade shows just because it’s situated in the beautiful city of Barcelona during a seasonally appropriate time of year. (Cheap cava and tapas don’t have anything to do with it either.) No, this show is a favorite because it’s one of the easiest to navigate, and there’s always plenty of interesting, fun, or just plain crazy tech to scavenge through.

HMD Rebrands (Sort of) and Teases a Barbie Phone

HMD, the company that once aimed to revive Nokia phones, made its mark at MWC 2024 by announcing a rebrand and a collaboration with Mattel to launch a Barbie feature flip phone. This delightful collaboration is all set to be launched this summer, and needless to say, it will be beautifully pink and serve as a fantastic digital detox device. While the appearance of the phone is currently pixelated, we eagerly await its release.

HMD also made headlines with the unveiling of its new phone featuring a system called HMD Fusion. This system appears to be similar to Motorola’s Moto Mods or Google’s long-lost Project Ara. It signifies a range of modular components that developers can build for the smartphone, including an extended battery, barcode scanner, payment terminal, and even medical equipment. HMD even released a toolkit for developers to facilitate the development process.

Furthermore, HMD emphasized its commitment to repairability. With roughly half of its global devices expected to be repairable, HMD aims to deliver sustainable and eco-friendly smartphones. Additionally, the company affirmed its plans to launch a highly efficient screen repair system that dramatically reduces the number of steps required to fix a cracked screen. This innovative approach speaks to HMD’s dedication to user convenience and satisfaction.

Motorola Bends a Phone and Debuts Smart Connect

At MWC, Motorola surprised attendees by showcasing the Adaptive Display, a bendable concept phone. This unique phone, similar to its Razr folding phones, offers users a remarkable range of viewing options by allowing the entire device to bend backward. The phone’s design, reminiscent of Motorola’s famous flip phones, caught the attention of tech enthusiasts at the event.

Motorola’s Adaptive Display innovation presents a unique twist in the smartphone industry, offering users unprecedented flexibility when it comes to smartphone functionality and design. This concept phone, showcased at the Mobile World Congress, hints at an exciting future for Motorola enthusiasts.
