Highest number of corona deaths: Shanghai seals off houses of infected people

The Chinese metropolis has been in lockdown for more than three weeks. Many people are reportedly lacking food and medicine. The authorities are now blocking the entrances to houses in which people infected with the corona virus live. The number of corona deaths continues to rise.

In China’s largest city, Shanghai, wire mesh fences have been erected around some residential buildings due to corona infections. Images of workers in white hazmat suits sealing apartment block entrances and cordoning off entire blocks of streets with tall green fences went viral on social media on Saturday, sparking questions and complaints from residents. The Reuters news agency was unable to verify the authenticity of all the photos and videos. Meanwhile, the authorities in Shanghai reported a new high of 39 corona deaths within 24 hours. This far exceeds the previous maximum of twelve deaths the day before.

The Chinese metropolis has been largely sealed off since the beginning of April, and most of the approximately 25 million inhabitants are hardly allowed to leave their homes. The authorities are hardly able to cushion the consequences for those trapped: the city is having trouble supplying its residents with fresh food or having them receive medical care because the healthcare system is primarily needed for corona tests and treatments.

Something similar could also blossom in the capital Beijing. 22 new infections were recorded there this Sunday. Initial observations suggest that the virus has been spreading “invisibly” in the capital for a week, affecting “schools, tour groups and many families,” official Pang Xinghuo said. “The risk of continued and covert transmission is high, and the situation is grim,” Tian Wei of the city party committee said at a news conference. “The entire city of Beijing must act immediately.”
