Higher turnover for supermarket chain Jumbo, goes into business with flash delivery

The parent company of supermarket chain Jumbo had more turnover in 2021 than the year before. In total, the turnover amounted to 9.9 billion euros. Last year it was still 9.68 billion euros.

However, the turnover is slightly lower than the company expected. Last year Jumbo had the target to reach 10 billion euros for the first time.

Jumbo will also collaborate with flash delivery company Gorillas. It delivers groceries in eleven Dutch cities and two Belgian cities, with the promise that groceries will be delivered within 10 minutes.

New form of competition

Jumbo sees flash deliverers as a new form of competition, as it turned out earlier. “That’s why you have to keep looking critically at your business model and make adjustments if necessary,” the company said in July.

The partnership that has now been announced means that Gorillas will sell part of Jumbo’s range, including Jumbo private label products. In the future, Jumbo’s online customers in certain cities will have the option to have their message delivered within a few minutes. The partnership is set to begin before March and is scaling rapidly, the companies say.

The place

The number of Jumbo stores has also increased: a total of 18 new branches have been opened, 9 of which are in Belgium. Jumbo’s market share is now about 22 percent.

The turnover of La Place, also part of Jumbo, remained at 52 million euros this year. Before corona, in 2019, that was still 165 million euros. Due to the measures, the branches were closed for a large part of the year. Many La Place employees have temporarily started working in branches of Jumbo and other parts of the company during corona.
