Meanwhile, the US media stressed that the death toll in New York City in the crisis exceeded that of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Almost 3,000 people died at that time. The New York City police officers are also particularly hard hit. At least twelve employees have already died in connection with suspected coronavirus infections, the news channel CNN reported on Tuesday. More than 2000 other employees are infected with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen. However, Mayor Bill de Blasio emphasized at a press conference on Monday evening (local time) that the situation was gradually improving. More and more police officers would report back to work after recovering from illness.
Across the United States, the worldwide record number of almost 2,000 people died within 24 hours as a result of the coronavirus infection. According to figures from Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday evening (local time), exactly 1939 people in the United States have succumbed to the lung disease Covid-19 caused by the novel virus since the previous day.
