Hidalgo Excels in Mexican Film Industry and Festivals Dedicated to Feminism and Inclusion

Movie theaters in Hidalgo registered an increase in ticket sales for Mexican movies during 2022, an increase of more than 40 percent that was dispersed in 32 national movie premieres, a higher number than in 2021, when only 23 films arrived made in Mexico to the entity’s exhibition complexes. In addition to this, Hidalgo settled in the top 3 of states with alternative exhibition spaces such as cultural centers, universities, film clubs, among others.

As every year, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) published the 2022 Mexican Film Yearbook, an official document where it discloses the statistics that represent the status of the seventh art at the national level in terms of exhibition, production, dissemination and relevance. , in addition to contrasting the data with the demographic situation corresponding to that period. Thus, the public body pointed out that despite the fact that no new commercial cinema complexes (Cinemex or Cinépolis) were opened, the sale of tickets for Mexican films had an increase of 43 percent compared to 2021.

In general terms, ticket sales for all kinds of movies went from 1.2 million in 2021 to 3.1 million tickets, an increase in real terms of 37.5 percent. It should be considered that in 2021 the exhibition complexes did not operate at their maximum capacity for the entire year, since the capacity restrictions were lifted until after the first quarter of that period. Paradoxically, it was these restrictions that promoted the opening of alternative spaces for the exhibition of Mexican cinema in the entity, since in 2022 Hidalgo was consolidated in the top 3 states with the largest number of these venues.

Only behind Mexico City (which accounted for 27 percent of this model) and tied with Puebla, 8 percent of Mexican film screenings nationwide were shown in the 26 alternative venues in Hidalgo, including Casa Fontana, Casa Amajac, Casa Pädi, Cultural Center of the Railway, Cineteca Tulancingo, Cineclub of the Institute of Arts of the UAEH, or the Cineclub Manuel Cabrera. The latter, located in Ciudad Sahagún, was also designated by the IMCINE as one of the offices in Mexico that actively participated in the selection of content aimed at children.

Hidalgo, a benchmark in festivals dedicated to feminism and inclusion

In another order of ideas, it was also reported that Hidalgo entered the national top 5 of entities that dedicate exhibition spaces through events or festivals specialized in disability and accessibility, with tapes that are shown with descriptive subtitles for people with hearing disabilities or well, with sign language translators. Here, the entity ranked fourth with two such festivals, tied with Campeche and behind the itinerant model (traveling festivals) with five, and Mexico City, with seven.

In addition, of the 12 festivals or events that took place in Mexico dedicated to women, feminism or gender perspective, Hidalgo hosted one of them: Dulcísimo Ovario, which in 2023 will reach its seventh edition. This festival sets a precedent in the category at the national level, as it is dedicated to exhibiting audiovisual material made by women filmmakers in Hidalgo, Mexico and the world. In 2022 alone, more than 200 works were received, of which 105 were exhibited in the capital of Hidalgo, as well as on the Filminlatino streaming platform.

IMCINE also offered data on the number of productions that were filmed in Hidalgo during the past year, a total of four with locations in the entity or shared with other entities: “The stranger behind the door”, “The road is a red thread “, “Gruta al amor” and “La Usurpadora: el musical”, which was shot entirely in Hidalgo.
