He added in a press conference after receiving the Qatari and Egyptian ambassadors, “It is clear that Hezbollah refuses to meet the Lebanese halfway. First, we withdrew our candidate Michel Moawad and nominated Jihad Azour as a gesture of good faith to end the presidential vacancy, but the “party” did not take any step towards electing a president.” .
He continued, “The reality is that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is not calling for sessions to elect the President of the Republic, and Hezbollah insists on its candidate. So we are faced with two choices: either to stand firm or submit. Either reject the logic of dictation, control and imposition, or submit and go with the candidate imposed by Hezbollah.” .
He added, “If Hezbollah is as keen on the country as it claims, then let it withdraw its candidate and propose another candidate. Then we will either choose between the two or go to a third option. All initiatives will not succeed if the two parties do not want to reach an agreement. Let them withdraw their candidate and meet us halfway, as we have already reached an agreement.” “We did it for us.”
He pointed out, “We will soon reach a dangerous entitlement in the Lebanese Army and fateful financial entitlements, and we need the institutions to be in place, so we accept meeting the other team halfway out of concern for the remaining institutions, and we try to pass the entitlement “with what is best.”
He pointed out, “They say they want guarantees, so why does the armed Hezbollah, which uses violence and is accused of assassinations and obstructing the constitution, want guarantees? The truth is that those who need guarantees are the Lebanese and us, because what we are asking for is the state and institutions, while it wants guarantees for its weapons.”
He stressed, “We want security guarantees against the threats from Hezbollah’s weapons, and here I turn directly to Mr. Nasrallah. Do you accept that one of your aides says that the opposition is a burden on the country?” Can you translate for us what the burden means? Is this a death threat on May 7? Is this the language in which you want to build a country with others? Our problem with you is that you are threatening and arrogant and that you have a militia that violates the constitution.”
He concluded: “We will confront the injustice and oppression practiced by Hezbollah on the Lebanese and we will reject it, and our confrontation is a confrontation of steadfastness. We are not trying to impose on the other party, but rather we are trying to preserve our rights, the rights of our people, and the future of our children in Lebanon.”
