Education lessons in Hesse start after three weeks of vacation

Hesse is the only federal state in which children and young people had an extra week off school at the beginning of the year. Now the “Hessian ski holidays” are coming to an end.
For hundreds of thousands of children and young people Hesse starts classes again on Monday. This means that there will be significantly more going on on the streets and in local public transport. The Hessian Christmas holidays were more than three weeks long – and therefore longer than in all other federal states. The half-yearly reports will be distributed on February 2nd.
Hesse is the only state in which the Christmas holidays lasted a week longer. The federal states coordinate on the summer holidays. This is to avoid too many people going on vacation in Germany at the same time. However, the states have leeway when it comes to other holiday dates – in Hesse, for example, there are no Whitsun holidays.
“The Christmas holidays are usually three weeks in Hesse,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture. The “Hessen Week” has been included in the holiday plan until 2030.
A total of around 800,000 students currently attend a general education school in the state. These include tens of thousands of Ukrainian children and young people who fled with their families from the Russian war of aggression.
