Here’s the Facts of the Lambda Variant That Rocked South America

INDOZONE.ID – There are indeed quite a few variants of COVID-19, one of which is the Lambda variant which has made several countries in South America shaken by the variant. How come there are so many variants?

Please note that WHO has determined the Lambda variant with the code C37 as a variant of interest (VoI). This indicates that this variant has a potential danger because it can be more easily transmitted, cause more severe symptoms, or can evade immunity, so it needs to be investigated further.

This variant itself greatly contributes to cases in several countries in South America, one of which is Peru, where 81 percent of COVID-19 cases that occur are caused by the Lambda variant.

“Authorities in Peru reported that 81 percent of the COVID-19 cases tested since April 2021 were Lambda-related. Argentina reported an increase in Lambda cases since the third week of February 2021, and from April 2 to May 19, 2021, this variant contributed to 37 percent of cases examined. ,” said WHO as quoted from CNBC, Friday (9/7/2021).

WHO said that this variant has almost the same rate of transmission as the Gamma variant. However, this variant is still not classified as a variant of concern (VoC). This is because researchers still need really strong evidence.
