Mechelen –

The supermarket that Albert Heijn will open in Mechelen at the end of next year will immediately be the largest in Belgium. The Dutch chain is planning the first location of its XL formula there.

Next week the official starting shot will be given for the construction of the Malinas retail park in the loop of the R6. That should open its doors to the public at the end of 2021 and around November. Many retail warehouses that are still located today at the Rode Kruisplein and the Guido Gezellelaan are moving to Malinas: AS Adventure, JBC and Van den Borre, among others, are taking up residence in the 23,750 square meter retail park.

One of the eye-catchers will be an AH XL, a formula of which there are already 37 in the Netherlands. Albert Heijn launched it in 2002 and with department stores of at least three thousand square meters of sales area, it is larger than a traditional AH supermarket. In addition to food, customers can also enjoy a wide range of non-food. “Next week we will announce even more new names for our Malinas retail park,” says Jan Du Bois of developer Mitiska Reim.
