Chile: referendum on new constitution

Around 30 years after returning to democracy, Chile could get a new constitution. Around 15 million Chileans were called to the polls on Sunday. The currently valid constitution of Chile dates from the time of the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. While it gives a lot of power to the central government of the South American country, the influence of citizens is limited. Proponents of a new constitution want to strengthen the social role of the state and include basic rights to work, health care, education and drinking water.
