NEW YORK – New Yorkers affected by Storm Ida who do not qualify for federal assistance from FEMA because of their immigration status will now be able to receive help thanks to new funding from the state.
This is because the state now has $ 27 million available to help all undocumented New Yorkers affected by flooding and other problems in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ida, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Sunday night. , and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
This funding will be distributed through grants to an established network of community organizations and will be provided to New Yorkers who did not qualify for storm recovery assistance through FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program.
“When I saw the devastation of Hurricane Ida, I promised that we would do everything possible to help affected communities recover, and this funding is a fulfillment of that promise,” said Governor Hochul. “With these resources dedicated to undocumented New Yorkers who do not qualify for FEMA aid and partnerships with organizations on the ground, we can close the gaps in aid and help New Yorkers in need. I urge New Yorkers who do comply. the requirement that they apply to obtain the funds they need to rebuild ”.
This program is being administered by the New York State Office for New Americans, (ONA), and will target undocumented individuals located in counties designated as major disaster zones including The Bronx, Kings, Nassau, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland. A select group of non-profit organizations will provide information, assistance and assistance to residents affected by the storm.
“We will ensure that New Yorkers have access to the help they need to recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ida,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Regardless of immigration status, we will gain support for the latest victims of our climate crisis and we are here to help every step of the way.”

The center provides information on available assistance programs and where to find services such as shelter and access to food.
