Henri Kox participated in the informal Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union

On July 15, 2021, the Minister of Internal Security, Henri Kox, took part in the internal security aspect of the meeting of ministers responsible for internal affairs of the EU. To mark the start of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, ministers met in Brdo pri Kranju in Slovenia.

Digital evolution and artificial intelligence

The ministers were invited to discuss the digital transformation which has changed the game not only for our societies, but also for law enforcement. Developments in this area should therefore benefit police services and it is essential to preserve their ability to act in this new digital environment.

The meeting then enabled the ministers to continue and deepen the discussion started on the European Commission’s proposal for a regulation on artificial intelligence. Member States agreed that the impact of this proposal for a regulation on the work of specialized agencies in the field of home affairs and law enforcement must be duly taken into account, as well as the impact on their tools. .

In this context, Minister Kox underlined the importance attached to the capacity of the agencies which according to him: “should allow us to ensure coordination at the level of research activities as well as to set up common technological solutions in the full respect for our normative and ethical rules. “

Process de Brdo-Brijuni

The Slovenian Presidency finally reported on the exchanges between the partners of the Brdo process in the field of migration and internal security. At their last meeting in June this year, participants in the process agreed on the importance of managing migration flows at the EU’s external borders and of prevention as well as investigations relating to the online abuse and sexual exploitation of minors.
