Help buying food in the United States for low-income families

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was designed as a benefit so that low-income people could buy food. However, after millions of citizens benefited from it for years, said program increased its amounts during the pandemic.

In addition, it was recently reported that these aids will see a reduction and return to their usual standards. It was May 2020, when this program was increased after the global pandemic by COVID-19 was decreed.

From that moment on, the beneficiaries received almost $100.00 USD extra on a monthly basis, which was added to the initial amount granted.

However, the federal spending law approved by the White House put an end to these emergency allocations since last December.

That is why as a result of this whole situation, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) made some requests to people. Among them is the request that those who do not receive the benefit of SNAP coupons consider other food aid. In this case, it would be through the agency’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).

Are there other options for similar programs or help to buy food?

People eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be able to take advantage of the assistance available from the Food and Nutrition Service. All this with the aim of satisfying your needs.

There is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Project for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) that provides cash for the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

This project also makes it easy for beneficiaries to access early childhood education services, referrals to social and health services.

But this is not the only option available from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). There is also the summer meals program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and support through school meals. This was announced by the agency in a statement.
