Helmut Marko: Max Verstappen’s Future in Formula 1 and Potential World Titles

today, 1:00 PM | by Noa de Ruijter

According to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, how many world titles Max Verstappen will ultimately win depends mainly on how long the Dutchman continues to enjoy Formula 1. However, Marko is not worried about that yet, and also sees no threats to the Limburger in the coming season.

Now that Verstappen already has three world titles to his name, the question is increasingly being asked how many more titles the Dutch champion can add to that list. Verstappen has previously stated that he does not want to stay in Formula 1 forever. Red Bull advisor Marko therefore thinks that Verstappen’s final number of world titles will depend on how long the Dutchman continues to enjoy motorsport. ‘It obviously depends on the car and the timing, but also certainly on what he wants. He should have fun and enjoy the sport,” Marko said the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com.

The Austrian is not worried that Verstappen will soon be hanging up his racing helmet. ‘At the moment that is certainly the case (that Verstappen likes F1, ed.) and that is of course a good sign. Of course he won’t ride for free, but money is certainly not the main motivation for Max.’

Verstappen is already giving feedback on the 2026 car

In addition to having a good time, it is also important for Verstappen to be in a good car. According to Marko, the Dutchman has already provided feedback for the 2026 car, the year in which the new regulations come into effect. ‘The whole package must of course suit him. In any case, he has a strong preference for lighter cars and all the things that go with them.’

Marko sees no threat to Red Bull

Ahead of the 2026 season, the current regulations will remain in effect. Red Bull and Verstappen are therefore favorites again for the world title in 2024. Marko also sees no other team that can threaten these favorite roles. ‘I can’t say that at the moment, as no opponent has been consistent last season. Every week it was someone else behind us,” said the Austrian. ‘But what I can say is that Max has really been in a class of his own last year. There is actually no one who can consistently compete with him at such a high level over a whole year.’
