This is an exceptional operation which took place on Thursday February 29, 2024, in a field in Nanteuil-lès-Meaux. At the very beginning of the afternoon, a helicopter landed near the plane which had had to make an emergency landing a few days earlier.

Stuck in the field near the D360, behind the Poullain garden center, the plane could no longer take off. Another machine had to be called to get him out. And not just any one, since it was a helicopter specializing in the transport of heavy and bulky objects which came to the plane’s rescue.

The plane suffered engine damage near Meaux

“The engine stalled while in flight, the pilot followed all procedures to restart it, but without success. He stood perpendicular to the field and landed there. He only had a few seconds to react,” breathes Philippe Lamy, the president of the French aeronautics club, based at the Meaux-Esbly aerodrome.

Atmospheric conditions are the cause of this accident. “The plane suffered engine icing, it happens when there is too much humidity in the air,” continues Philippe Lamy.

After a week in the field, it was time for the plane to return to the airfield. The company SAF Hélicoptères prepared the plane, passed the cables around the aircraft, secured everything, then, very quickly, came to helicopter the plane, weighing more than 800 kg with its fuel.

“The plane is set to “nose down”, that is to say with the nose down to prevent it from flying once in the air. The helicopter must be able to control its load,” comments Philippe Lamy.

To secure the transport, the police and the DDT blocked traffic for a few minutes on the roads that the helicopter flew over to reach the airfield. The roads, D360 and A140, remained closed for less than ten minutes.

This is the time it took for the helicopter to land its load at the Meaux-Esbly airfield.

“We are used to carrying very heavy loads. Before this plane today, we helicoptered a pylon, then a spa weighing more than a ton,” smiles Xavier Decroux, heliport manager for SAF.
