Heavy storms and hailstorms will arrive in the Czech Republic on Sunday. River levels may rise

On Saturday morning, an extreme degree of flood danger applied in some places in the Czech Republic. According to CHMI meteorologists, the levels of watercourses could rise to the highest level of floods, similar to what happened in some parts of the country on Friday and Saturday nights.

The warning against rising levels of streams after previous storms originally applied until today’s 15:00 for the entire Moravian-Silesian Region, most of the Olomouc Region and also the eastern part of the Hradec Králové and Pardubice Regions. At noon, however, meteorologists clarified the warning and currently the risk of floods is minimal.

According to CHMI experts, the situation will change on Sunday morning, when storms and hailstorms will arrive in the Czech Republic, which will also be accompanied by strong winds. “On Sunday afternoons and evenings, there can be very strong thunderstorms, accompanied by short-term totals of around 50 millimeters, gusts of wind around 90 kilometers per hour and hail,” meteorologists warn.

“Locally, torrential rain is expected with possible intensive outflow of water from the slopes, rapid distribution of small streams and dry riverbeds, flooding of underpasses, underpasses, cellars, grounding of roads or their clogging with entrained material. Gusts of wind can break branches, uproot trees. Hail and lightning are also a danger. We can expect damage to property, power outages, problems in transport, “experts point out.

The second degree of danger applies in the entire South Bohemian, Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions, the Vysočina region and in parts of the Central Bohemian and Olomouc regions. The first-level warning then applies to the Liberec, Central Bohemian, Plzeň, South Moravian, Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions, as well as Prague.

Fallen trees and landslides

On Saturday morning, Moravian-Silesian firefighters recorded almost three hundred interventions due to storms and torrential rains in the region. On the so-called extended Rudná in the direction from Ostrava to Opava, they even dealt with a slope that collapsed on the road.

Most often, firefighters drew water from cellars or lagoons and cut down trees due to severe storms. The interventions went unnoticed. From 5 pm on Friday to 6 am on Saturday, firefighters in the region record 266 weather-related interventions – 14 of them in the Frýdek-Místek district, 21 Karviná, 78 Nový Jičín, 38 Opava and 115 Ostrava. “At the moment, there are still about twenty interventions in progress, but this is not an increase, but an additional repair of damage,” Jakub Kozák, a spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian fire brigade, told Deník on Saturday after eight o’clock in the morning.

Six fire brigades intervened in Jeseník nad Odrou in the Novojičín region, where torrential rain flooded not only the individual cellars but also the premises in the center of the village.

“Firefighters had to protect the transformer station from the flood – they dug several temporary canals from the created lagoon into the river and thus managed to keep the water level below the critical point. They also protected the culture house from flooding. .

In Studénka, a stream spilled from the banks

As the rain progressed through the region, it caused problems, for example, in Studénka, where the Butovický brook spilled from the banks, thus preventing traffic on several streets in the city. Firefighters drained the flooded houses until late in the evening after the water subsided.

The same situation occurred later in Ostrava. After 8 pm, firefighters had to pump water from several garages, clear sewers or remove several trees. In some places, firefighters built dikes from sacks to direct the water to places where it would not cause damage.

“On the road I / 11 – ie on the” extended Rudná “- the slope of the road collapsed due to heavy rain. The firefighters removed the mud deposits and loosened both lanes,” added Jakub Kozák.

In the Opava region, water flooded houses and cellars

In Dobroslavice in the Opava region, the wind damaged the asbestos roof and the water began to flow into the house. In other parts of this region, firefighters dealt with the consequences of torrential rains – water flooded the ground floor of a family house in Kružberk, firefighters in Štáblovice drained water from the flooded sewer.

Water flooded cellars and roads also in the Frýdek-Místek region. Firefighters had to drain several ditches in Jablunkov and thus reduce the risk of flooding the adjacent family houses.

The bad weather also caused a number of things in the Moravian-Silesian Region traffic accidents. The accident with a serious injury to a motorcyclist occurred on Friday after 3 pm in Třinec, where the driver of a truck crashed into a biker. The tragic accident occurred on Friday in the Opava region, where a biker died in the accident. According to a police spokesman, he most likely failed to drive at high speed and crashed on a wet road.

The search for the man who bathed under the weir continues

In Orlickoústecko divers are still searching after a twenty-two-year-old man who went swimming in the Orlice River on Friday. Divers, secured by rope ties, searched the weir itself, which had apparently become fatal for the young man. In places near the Orlické Ústí swimming pool, where the tragedy took place, the river is up to four meters deep after recent local floods.

According to firefighters, the body could be located on the banks of the river, wedged under the roots of the trees that grow here. “It will most likely be wedged somewhere below the surface between the roots. A sharp current can also erupt the so-called pockets by the banks and it is possible that the man’s body will be right there, “explains Jakub Hlavsa from the Fire and Rescue Service of Ústí nad Orlicí.

Firefighters in the Olomouc region were bothered by smaller streams

Pumping water from cellars, fallen trees, flooded underpass, but also fears that flash floods will recur. Firefighters in the Olomouc region they had a busy night and, due to a storm accompanied by heavy downpours, they set out for forty events. Most interventions were in the Prostějov and Olomouc regions.

“After strong storms, which hit the region mainly on Friday evening and Saturday night, we record forty trips. We mainly solved fallen trees, clogged sewers and culverts and drew water from cellars. For example, in Droždín, the water that flowed in from the fields threatened the transformer station. But we also monitored the situation in Šumvald, “said regional fire spokeswoman Lucie Balážová.

Pearl barley like golf balls

The situation was similar on Friday in the South Moravian Region. The downpour employed mainly firefighters. “In connection with the early evening storm, we record more than forty events – mostly in the Pohořelice region and also in Žabčice and its surroundings in the Brno region. We most often draw water from flooded areas, “said Filip Venclovský, a spokesman for South Moravian firefighters.

The village of Rybníky in the Znojmo region was also covered with large hail in several waves. “Some were almost as big as golf balls. It beat up our crop in the garden. Fortunately, the husband managed to hide the car, but the brother-in-law’s hail damaged the pergola. The neighbors have hay floating in the mud in the field, “said Kateřina Chaloupková, one of the locals, to Deník.

According to her, the surrounding field was under water for a while. The water flooded the roads. “As soon as the storm came, it left as fast. It was all over in half an hour, “added Chaloupková.
