sport">Van Riessen has to stay in hospital for the time being. “I’m glad I’m reasonably okay, because it could have been a lot worse. My body hurts, as does the fact that I can no longer take action during these Games. But I’m okay and I’ll be back.”

sport">Yet Van Riessen also had a laugh. “The best news I got here was that Shanne Braspennincx won the keirin. I am proud of her, she really deserved this medal.”

sport">Van Riessen crashed hard on the keirin part on the cycling track in Izu on Friday. The 33-year-old track rider came into contact with the rear wheel of the German Emma Hinze during her quarterfinals, had to steer upwards and hit British Katy Marchant. Both crashed hard against the Siberian hardwood track, but Van Riessen was in the worst condition.

sport">After initial medical treatment along the track, Van Riessen was taken away on a stretcher and transported to the hospital. “She’s fine, but can’t remember the fall. However, she was able to make it clear that the pain mainly concerns her shoulder. The team doctor is with her,” a spokeswoman for the Dutch track team reported after the incident.
