Heart pillows for breast cancer operated

Patients operated on for breast cancer at Hospital de León and Hospital del Bierzo received free heart-shaped pillows with a very specific pattern to relieve and protect scars after surgery. It is an altruistic initiative of the León Heart Pillow Association, which prepares and delivers between 50 and 70 of these items each month in the two hospitals in the province.

This small cushion is indicated for use by women who have recently undergone breast cancer surgery. The pillow helps alleviate the side effects of surgery by preventing the arm from rubbing the wound while supporting the shoulder muscles. The deep indentation of the heart makes it easy for the pillow to fit precisely under the arm on the side of the operated breast.

The León Heart Pillow Association began its journey last year under the creation of Adela Martín, president of the group. The association produces its products for free thanks to contributions from members and donations, both financial and material. The project has a long international history and came to Spain through Mallorca, led by María José Loly de Cooman, ‘Micky’.

Martín stressed that to maintain the current pace of deliveries, the association needs the collaboration of citizens. In this sense, the vice president of the group, Isabel Castrillo, explained that those interested can collaborate with the association by contributing cotton fabrics or an economic donation of one euro per month through the Teaming application. The association also seeks sponsorships and donations from collaborating companies and carries out the sale of key rings at a price of two euros per unit.
