Every weekday morning, Evert van der Steege’s alarm goes off at five o’clock. ,,And I’ll be home at five o’clock in the afternoon. Twelve hours away from home every day.” And with two children, aged 2 and 7, he also has a busy family life. Van der Steege (46) has been working as a carpenter in construction for 25 years. “It is physically demanding work. I already have physical complaints. I’m not going to keep this job until I retire.”
