Health urges parents to complete vaccination scheme for children

The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare urges parents to comply with the vaccination scheme for the youngest in the house, especially the triple viral vaccine: measles, mumps and rubella, to be applied between 12 and 18 months.

The Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) implemented as of this February the new vaccination scheme, approved by the National Technical Advisory Committee for Immunizations (Contenai). This occurs after the confirmation of the case of measles in the national territory and concern for cases in neighboring countries, in order to generate effective protection for boys and girls.

The new scheme contemplates the triple viral vaccine, measles, mumps, rubella, which is applied to the first dose at 12 months of life, and with the new update, the second dose is brought forward at 18 months. This modification applies to those born from August 2021.

For those born before August 2021, for the administration of the second dose of the MMR vaccine, the minimum interval of four weeks between the two doses must be respected.

Likewise, parents of children 18 months and older pending receiving the second dose should bring them to the vaccination center, in order to complete their schedule.

What is measles?

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases that exist, it can be transmitted through coughing and sneezing. People can get measles by breathing air contaminated with the virus or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.

It mainly affects children and unvaccinated people, can become complicated and cause pneumonia, brain infection and death.

Symptoms include fever and red spots, which may be accompanied by respiratory symptoms and conjunctivitis. If they appear, doctors recommend urgently attending a care center, where the staff in white will report the symptoms and the case will be investigated.

In our country, several suspected measles cases were registered, and more than 40 samples were sent to the United States to confirm or rule out the disease.

Health remembers that vaccines protect, are reliable and free and invite everyone to go to the nearest vaccination center and comply with the vaccination schedule.
