Health suspends scheduled surgical activity except urgent

València, Jan 9 (EFE) .- The Ministry of Health has suspended all scheduled surgical activity, except for those urgent conditions that are not delayed or derivable as a reinforcement measure in response to the pandemic.

According to the general director of Healthcare, Mariam García Layunta, in the Valencian Community, as in the rest of Spain and Europe, “we have recently been noticing a significant increase in the accumulated incidence”.

In a statement, he stressed that “the number of cases is increasing, and that is, logically, an increase in the pressure of care in our hospitals, both for hospital admissions in the ward and in critical units.”

García Layunta has reported that the health departments, as they did in the first wave, are applying their contingency plans, which basically consist of “expanding spaces, doubling beds that allow for greater healthcare capacity in the room and in critics “.

“This means,” García Layunta continued, “that at this time we still have sufficient capacity to respond to the demands we are having and, in addition, we have other facilities that we did not have in the first wave, such as field hospitals. they are prepared or the Ernest Lluch hospital “.

The general director also recalled that, in addition, in November the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, “issued a resolution where the resources of private health were made available to us in this public-private collaboration”.

Among the organizational measures that hospitals must adopt within their contingency plans, Mariam García Layunta has cited the use of new spaces “that were previously dedicated to other uses” and “the suspension of those activities that are not urgent, for example surgery scheduled, and that they can wait because at this time our priority is the care of COVID and non-COVID patients who require hospitalization. “

“But we will postpone the interventions that can be postponed and, obviously, when this is over we will try to recover as soon as possible.”

Other organizational measures adopted are the suspension of non-preferential diagnostic tests and scheduled admissions, except for those involved in rapid cancer diagnosis (breast and colon cancer screening, protocolized rapid circuits, etc.).

Finally, García Layunta has highlighted that: “we believe that, with all this, together with the measures that the Valencian government has adopted to be able to face the pandemic, in which certain activities are limited and responsibility is requested above all of the population, we will soon be able to get out of this situation, without the capacity of the hospitals being exceeded, guaranteeing care for all Valencians “.
