Health. Metz hospitals: the lack of staff continues and worries

“Recruitment difficulties have been increasing for two years,” says Régis Moreau, director of Uneos (private hospitals in Metz). “It’s a real problem,” adds Marie-Odile Saillard, general manager of CHR Metz-Thionville. The crisis, the one that is perpetuating, is the lack of nursing staff. At CHR Metz-Thionville, the defection is approaching a hundred, at Claude-Bernard, forty, in the Uneos group (HP Metz), a good sixty.

As the thrill of a second wave of Covid is felt, there is cause for concern. In March, the health crisis greatly affected health professionals. They gave it their all for months. The revival of activity did not spare them. Fatigue, exhaustion is still felt and the workforce is still absent subscribers.

The situation is serious

The situation is such that it can damage the continuity of care. The director of CHR Metz-Thionville admits that this situation can jeopardize the supply of beds. “I sometimes put services on hold for one or two months due to a lack of staff.” Marie-Odile Saillard does not mince words: “We did not draw the conclusions from the first wave. We’re ready to face one second, the skills are there. But we don’t have enough men in the medical profession. “

At the public hospital, it is also the doctors who are missing. The Moselle is not a home region, of course. But where the shoe pinches according to the director of the CHR, it is in the area of emoluments. “There is a tropism from doctors to the private sector. It is true that the directors of Claude-Bernard as of Uneos do not complain of absences from the medical profession. The reason ? “It’s not just the financial aspect, which is more interesting in the private sector. The public hospital provides continuous care. Working conditions at night can be worse than during the day. The staff are exhausted. Is it normal that doctors in the public sector are less well paid while in the public as in the private sector, remuneration comes from social security and mutual funds? “

Marie-Odile Saillard admits that she was waiting for the Segur de la santé to smooth out these differences. “We could have adapted the legal statutes to go towards common agreements between the public and the private sector. ” It is not so.

How to cure it ?

How to remedy this defection? “By making people want to join the world of health,” says Régis Moreau. The CEO of the Uneos group is working in this direction. Internal agreements offer six weeks of vacation and 15 RTT. “We strive to supplement employee compensation. Rather than paying temporary workers, we are offering overtime. “

Hospital directors still call for the opening of training. “Leaving schools is not consistent with retirements and the needs of the territories,” explains Régis Moreau. “I train 350 nurses every year in the three nursing schools,” says Marie-Odile Saillard. A full promotion starts in Luxembourg. We train at a loss! “

All of the hospital departments are asking for training places to be opened. Marie-Odile Saillard would like to see agreements in place with Luxembourg. “I want to train well, but we can envisage a financial return. “
