Health Department active federal aid for people without medical coverage

Faced with the state of emergency that is going through the country, the secretary of health, Dr. Rafael Rodríguez Mercado, announced today the activation of the Emergency Medicine Assistance Program (EPAP).

This federal Program allows access to prescription drugs, medical equipment, medical supplies and vaccination to those citizens who do not have a health plan.

“We keep in constant communication with the federal government and we are asking for all the help that can benefit citizens to preserve their well-being. We do not want anyone to be discovered and without access to health services. The activation of this Program is one of the steps we have taken. We will keep providing, coordinating and always requesting all possible help that is directed to the health and well-being of our people. This was required by Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and we have kept complying with her instruction, ”said the head.

EPAP provides an efficient mechanism for pharmacies enrolled in the country to process claims for prescription drugs, medical supplies, vaccines and medical equipment for eligible people in a disaster area identified by the federal government. At the moment, more than 750 pharmacies in Puerto Rico participate in this program.

Eligible individuals can receive a free 30-day supply of their medications while EPAP is activated. People can also use the program to receive vaccinations or to replace medical supplies or medical equipment that were lost or damaged due to the emergency or during the eviction from the residence. EPAP only covers items prescribed by a licensed health care provider.

Residents of Puerto Rico, without medical coverage, can visit participating pharmacies and deliver their prescription to be dispensed for free, under this program. You can also call Express Scripts at 855-793-7470 to find out if your prescription drugs or medical equipment are covered by EPAP and identify a participating pharmacy near your location. Also, access www.PHE.gov/EPAP for more details.
