Exploratory talks in Baden-Württemberg begin on Wednesday

After the election in Baden-Württemberg, the victorious Greens led by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann will start exploring the formation of a government on Wednesday. The party invited the CDU, SPD and FDP to a “first round of exploratory talks” in two days on Monday, a statement said. The election result on Sunday is decisive for the order.

Information about a second round would be announced in a timely manner. A spokeswoman for the Greens in Stuttgart had previously said that the next exploratory talks should take place on Friday.

The Greens, who are currently ruling in Stuttgart in a green-black alliance with the CDU, had won the election, according to the preliminary result, with a clear lead of 32.6 percent. The CDU with its top candidate Susanne Eisenmann came to 24.1 percent.

The SPD reached eleven percent in the state elections, the FDP was 10.5 percent and the AfD came to 9.7 percent. The left failed because of the five percent hurdle. This means that there would be majorities in the newly elected state parliament for a new edition of green-black and for a traffic light coalition of the Greens, SPD and FDP.

The Baden-Württemberg Green leadership around Kretschmann has not yet made a decision with a view to the future government coalition. Instead, Kretschmann emphasized his general willingness to talk to all parties except the AfD on Sunday evening.
