Head-up display for Tesla Model 3 & Model Y probably from June> teslamag.de

It only took a few minutes for the first readers to recognize our message about a Head-up Display (HUD) for Model 3 and Model Y directly from Tesla as April Fool’s Day, and even the short Twitter summary was quickly exposed. But what none of the commentators seemed to notice: The company Hudway was given as the source for the image for the message – and this is actually being prepared by a HUD especially for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Who really lacks such an advertisement should be able to get it according to current information from this June. So the HUD option does not come from Tesla itself, as claimed on April 1, but will most likely soon be an external solution for retrofitting.

Special Tesla edition for HUD

Inquiries from teslamag.de to Hudway initially remained unanswered. But there is an Indiegogo campaign by the company for a HUD product called Drive, which is also available in a special Tesla Model 3 / Y edition. This variant is not yet sold out (40 out of 50), but a total of over 150,000 euros came for Drive.

In an update to Indiegogo on March 19, Aleksei Ostanin from Hudway also writes that he is sorry to have to postpone appointments again. He is still stuck in Hong Kong and will probably not be able to return to the US anytime soon, and the hardware is painfully slow but moving ahead. There is now a final round of tests and then mass production will begin – probably in April. On the website, the “expected start date” is given in early June 2020.

Tesla data only in a roundabout way

According to the description, the HUD system for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y as well as the standard variant (which should also be suitable for Tesla Model S and thus probably also Model X) will be portable. It consists of a housing with a projector adapted to the Tesla dashboard, which creates images on a vertically mounted small pane. The information for this is transmitted wirelessly, but the technology is likely to require a cable or battery power supply.

And of course, if Tesla does not offer it itself, the HUD will not display any internal vehicle information, at least not without additional effort. But a hobbyist has already shown that Tesla data can be read out and transmitted to a display for the driver by radio, although in this case not realized as a head-up, but conventionally behind the wheel.

Optimum information for Tesla drivers?

If you combine both, you could actually get a head-up display integrated into the software for the driver in the Tesla, which some consider to be the optimal information solution. Then there is the question of taste – the Hudway product may be adapted to Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, but still sits as a visible extra box with a pane above the ventilation slot. Tesla boss Musk could probably do better – if he wanted to.
