He holds the key to music in his hand: Gidon Kremer turns 75

The music of Mieczysław Weinberg, a friend of Shostakovich, gripped him late. But ever since, Gidon Kremer has championed this composer with his own artistic persuasion. The great violinist turns 75 on Sunday.

Gidon Kremer got infected. Not from the miserable corona virus, but from a fever that has been rampant in the international music world for much longer. It’s “vineyard fever”, a fortunately completely harmless form of enthusiasm that goes viral in a different way, for a composer at that. It is named after Mieczysław Weinberg, a friend and protégé of Dmitri Shostakovich who was born in Warsaw in 1919 and died in Moscow in 1996. Today, Kremer is the most important pioneer for a renaissance of Weinberg’s gripping music.
