Known to the Chartrains as a historian and local figure, Roger Joly died on January 7, 2002.
He was, too, a teacher, a local scholar and a resistance fighter. He was, during a mandate, elected municipal and, also, a very active member of several cultural and social associations. A town square now bears his name. It is located near the IUT.
Roger Joly was born on March 8, 1924 in Chartres, near rue de la Volaille. An only son, he was brought up among needles and rags, in his mother’s sewing workshop, Armande. His father, Eugène was municipal collector at the City of Chartres and he played the bassoon in the municipal harmony.

On the morning of August 16, 1944, he went to the prefecture, with his Lebel rifle and around thirty cartridges. “You also have to wear a uniform! The formality is quickly accomplished, I take my passive defense armband out of my pocket and, on the back, using colored pencils, I trace the letters FFI framed by two blue and red bands ”, he writes in his dedicated book. at the liberation of Chartres published in 1994.
Injured during the liberation of the city, Roger Joly was hit by several bullets which crossed his right hand (and broke the ring finger) and both thighs. When he is lying on the ground, a grenade explodes behind him, injuring his feet, legs and back.
Professor of various colleges and high schools, Roger Joly was passionate about history and archeology, he has many publications and a rich documentary collection that he offered to the municipal archives. He is also the founder of the school museum with André Thoby, deputy mayor of Chartres between 1977 and 1983 and in charge of town planning and finance.
With his wife Marcelle, they had two daughters and two sons.
When he died in 2002, he was six times a grandfather.
