Having COVID-19 Symptoms Anosmia Could Be A Good Sign, Why Is That?

Jakarta

A recent study in the Journal of Internal Medicine identified 86 percent of COVID-19 patients lost their sense of smell and taste or anosmia. However, the majority of them, around 55 percent, only experienced mild COVID-19 symptoms.

This is what experts believe, COVID-19 patients with symptoms of anosmia show good signs. Even so, the reason why people with COVID-19 symptoms of anosmia do not often complain of severe symptoms has not been explained in related studies.

The assumption is that so far, it is possible that those who initially complained of mild COVID-19 symptoms such as anosmia have higher antibodies.

“However, the exact answer remains elusive,” explains the assistant professor of rhinology at Columbia University, quoted from Healthline.

“We know that the loss of smell in COVID-19 (anosmia) is more than the simple mechanism we see with seasonal respiratory infections, where the common symptoms of nasal congestion and runny nose result in poor airflow and reduced delivery of odors to areas of the nose that have function related to smell,” he said.

Few have severe COVID-19 symptoms

The study, which analyzed 2,581 COVID-19 patients at 18 European hospitals, also found that 55 percent of anosmia COVID-19 patients experienced mild symptoms. Meanwhile, 37 percent of COVID-19 patients with other anosmia complaints experienced moderate to critical symptoms, and 6.9 percent of COVID-19 patients with critical symptoms.

Most patients with COVID-19 symptoms of anosmia finally recover

“According to research, most people recover their sense of smell within 3 weeks,” said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

“Those who require a COVID-19 recovery time of up to 2 months are only 15 percent, and those that require COVID-19 recovery for up to 6 months are only under 5 percent,” he continued.

According to him, the data on COVID-19 patients complaining of anosmia still needs to be monitored.

What if I suddenly experience COVID-19 symptoms of anosmia?

Overdest mentions the symptoms of COVID-19 anosmia can be overcome by stimulating the smell again using essential oils. You can also regularly take supplements.

An ongoing clinical trial is currently examining omega-3 fatty acid supplements for treating the symptoms of COVID-19 anosmia.
