Have the “girls of 1960” managed to realize their dreams in independent Latvia?

The film “1960 “girls of the year” tells about those pages of history that remain behind the scenes of major events, telling this story through the lives of specific women. Every year on March 21, there is a gathering of students from teacher Lapaine’s class. Twenty-five years ago, the director U. Celma shot a film with the same name – “1960. girls of the year”. Also at that time, the gathering table was covered with drinks, cakes and sweets. Like every year. A traditional class photo is also taken every year. Today, these earlier girls are mothers, aunts and grandmothers. Their fates have changed, but what about themselves?

“This is the story of my classmates, children of complete and total socialism, the environment where we grew up, our youth and who we are today. They are not written about in the newspapers or talked about in the mass media. They are visible in the background.

We know they exist, but that’s about it. They are women of their generation, some of the many who represent the destiny of their sex. A generation that lived in two completely different systems. The legacy of these systems was passed on to future generations. It is about women whose main function was to build a family and raise children. It was they who did paid work, cooked, cleaned, washed and stood in long lines to buy sausage. Did they manage to realize their dreams and their potential as women and as individuals?” the film “1960 girls of the year” says U. Celma. Producer – Matīss Kaža. The film features music by Mārtiņš Braun.
