May 8, 2020 by world today news The first Covid-19 case in Lower Franconia became known in early March. How many people have died since then, are still acutely ill or have recovered. And: what number gives hope. – People in protective masks are currently shaping the cityscape in downtown Würzburg. Photo: Silvia Gralla On March 5, the Würzburg Health Department announced that the first people in Lower Franconia were infected with the novel corona virus. A test with a young couple – one of whom had previously been to Italy – was positive. Likewise with a student from the Leonhard Frank elementary school in Würzburg and his parents. Almost at the same time, the district of Bad Kissingen and the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg reported the first corona infected. – More than two thirds of all sufferers recover From then on, the number of newly confirmed Covid 19 cases in the region increased daily, relatively strongly in the Schweinfurt region (see graphic), particularly rapidly in absolute numbers in the city and district of Würzburg. As of Wednesday, May 6th, 3,290 people in Lower Franconia were proven to have been infected with the corona virus, almost 870 in the Würzburg hotspot alone. The health authorities estimated that at least 2,300 people had already recovered that day. Official doctors classify a Covid 19 case as recovered if 14 days have passed after the first symptoms of the disease and if the symptoms have been free of symptoms for at least the last 48 hours. – So while more than two thirds of all infected people in Lower Franconia had survived the disease at this time, 180 people in the region had died as a result of the infection by May 6th. All persons who died with and from SARS-CoV-2 are counted as Covid 19 deaths. The exact cause of death is known for more than 90 percent of all coronavirus deaths, according to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL). Of them, 92 percent died from Covid-19 and eight percent from another cause. More than 60 percent of all deaths were residents of homes In Lower Franconia it was particularly hard for the retirement homes. National media focused particularly on the St. Nikolausheim in Würzburg. There the first person in Bavaria died of the consequences of a coronavirus infection. On April 23, it was announced that the public prosecutor’s office had launched preliminary investigations into two Würzburg retirement homes. At that time there were 49 deaths in five retirement homes in the Würzburg area, 22 deaths in five homes in the city and district of Schweinfurt, 13 in six homes in the Aschaffenburg district and ten in five homes in the Bad Kissingen district. 18 percent of all nursing homes in Lower Franconia were affected by the virus until May 6th. And: 64 percent of all coronavirus deaths were residents of homes. A look at the whole of Bavaria shows that the most common infection was between the ages of 35 and 59. From the age of 60, the number of deaths among those infected increases. Most corona deaths are in the group of over 80 year olds. More men than women have been infected with the corona virus and have died of Covid-19. – April 24: For the first time, no new infections within 24 hours in Würzburg But the days of the virus are numbered, it seems. Since the end of April there have been fewer new infections in Lower Franconia every day. On April, 24th reported the Würzburg health office For the first time since March 5, no new corona cases in the city and district within 24 hours. On May 6, however, according to the Lower Franconia government, 143 people suffering from Covid 19 were treated in Lower Franconian hospitals. 32 of them were in intensive care units. More than 1200 Lower Franconia were still under quarantine. All of these numbers change every hour. Only the cases that are available to the nine Lower Franconian health offices, from there electronically to the government of Lower Franconia and from there to the State Office for Health and Food Safety in Erlangen, are listed in the graphics below. The LGL in turn reports the Bavarian cases to the Robert Koch Institute.
