Hard to find appropriate healthcare staff for penal institutions NOW

It is difficult for penal institutions to find the right care staff, the Health and Youth Inspectorate reports in a report following discussions with the institutions. The inspectorate also sees an increase in the number of “vulnerable detainees”.

This concerns care staff in prisons, detention centers, detention centers and forensic psychiatric centers.

Personnel shortages in health care are difficult to fill in the current labor market. This applies to all function groups within the judicial institutions.

The institutions also signal an increase in detainees with an intellectual disability, psychological problems, addiction, age problems or a combination of these problems.

This increasingly complex target group in combination with the staff shortages is increasingly being experienced as a bottleneck.

From the interviews it appears that the waiting times for prison institutions are also experienced as constraining by the detainees. Due to the pressure on the number of places in the institutions it sometimes happens that people who need psychological care now sometimes wait in an isolation cell for a suitable place.
