The manifesto of the alleged perpetrator shows “alongside confused thoughts” a “deeply racist outlook”. The first shots are said to have been fired at around 10 p.m. and in the “Midnight” shisha bar in the city center. Several people were shot there, said a police spokesman. Eyewitnesses confirmed the shots to WELT in this shisha bar. A dark car drove away from there. Afterwards, more people were shot in the Kesselstadt district further west.
Hours after the crime, the police discovered the body of the alleged gunman in his apartment and his dead mother. R.’s father was apparently also in the apartment, he survived unharmed. There are currently no indications of other perpetrators.

Tobias R. published right-wing extremist ideas
The alleged perpetrator is the German Tobias R. The 43-year-old was a sports shooter and had a corresponding gun possession card. WELT learned this from administrative circles.
A few days before the crime, R. published a video on Youtube. In this video, the man speaks in fluent English a “personal message to all Americans”. There were underground military facilities in the United States where children were mistreated and killed. There the devil would be paid homage. American citizens should wake up and “fight now” against these conditions. He is also negative about migrants from Arab countries and Turkey.

The video does not contain a reference to an impending act of violence in Germany. R. had also published several letters before the attack that are available to WELT. It contains various right-wing extremist and racist statements. In his opinion, it is not enough to identify certain ethnic groups, since their existence is “a fundamental mistake in itself”. A number of peoples must “be completely destroyed”, including half of Asia, various ethnic groups from North Africa and Israel.
The alleged perpetrator previously lived in various places in Bavaria. According to Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU), the 43-year-old German lived temporarily in Upper Franconia and in Upper Bavaria. “Most recently, he was probably in southern Bavaria in 2018,” said Herrmann on Thursday in Friedberg in the Augsburg district. At the time, however, there was no evidence that the man was an extremist.
Turkey condemns “racist attack” and calls for quick clarification
Except for R.’s mother, all of Hanau’s fatalities have a migration background. As the German Press Agency also learned from security circles on Thursday, four of the five injured have foreign roots. The Turkish tabloid “Hürriyet”, citing a testimony, reports that the perpetrator first shot three Turkish guests who were eating, and then the Turkish waiter.
He then killed a 20-year-old Turk, a 20-year-old Bosnian and a Polish waitress in the “Arena” hookah bar. Turkish President Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin confirmed on Twitter that Turkish citizens are among the victims.
