Hamilton considered canceling Met Gala in New York after Monza crash

Helmut Marko recently became extremely critical of Lewis Hamilton’s presence at the Met Gala. Hamilton now reveals that he considered skipping the event but had good reason to attend.

During the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton and Max Verstappen were involved in a serious crash. The Briton indicated afterwards that he had some complaints about the incident, but appeared at the Met Gala in New York a day later. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko in particular was critical of this, because he thought that Hamilton must have acted reasonably if he could just get on the plane. Hamilton admits he did consider canceling his trip to New York for the Met Gala.

However, his presence at the event had been planned for months and this year was especially important for the seven-time world champion, as this time he had his own table with young black designers. “I spoke to someone on my team and said, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t go.’ To which the person replied: ‘If you really don’t want to go, it will be a shame for these people, but I’m sure they will understand.’ Then I decided I really didn’t want to let them down,” Hamilton told ESPN.

The Brit therefore decided to list what he needed to make the trip to New York. “I had Angela [de fysiotherapeut van Hamilton] needed, just in case things got worse or my back stiffened up. So Angela went with me.” He emphasizes that his back and neck were still taped, that he was checked regularly and that he received acupuncture treatments to release the tension. “It was still quite stiff when I went to the Met. Gala went, but I was fine and on anti-inflammatories. You just have to deal with it.”

Once in New York, Hamilton was able to put everything into perspective. “I’m in a period of my life when I felt an awful lot of gratitude,” he explains. “I really thought, wow things in life can change so quickly, in a millisecond something can happen. I was just so grateful that I was there, that I was healthy and not in worse shape.”
