(Johannesburg = Yonhap News) Correspondent Hyunmin Yoo = Hamas announced that the organization’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Cairo, Egypt on the 20th (local time).
With Haniyeh’s trip to Egypt, expectations are materializing that negotiations regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages will resume.
Hamas said in a statement that day that Haniyeh would meet with Egyptian government officials, including Abbas Kamel, head of Egypt’s National Intelligence Service (GNI), to discuss the war in the Gaza Strip.
Egypt, along with Qatar, where Haniyeh resides, has played a key role in the temporary ceasefire negotiation process as a mediator for both sides since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
Haniyeh’s visit to Egypt, his second since the outbreak of war, came shortly after Israel announced its intention to resume negotiations for the release of hostages.
Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog said in a meeting with the diplomatic corps stationed there the previous day, “Israel is ready to allow another humanitarian ceasefire and additional humanitarian aid for the release of hostages.”
Previously, David Varnia, director of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, Bill Burns, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and Qatari Prime Minister Muhammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed a new negotiation plan for the release of Israeli hostages in Warsaw, Poland, on the 18th.
Currently, it is known that about 129 hostages remain in the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli military believes that about 20 of them are dead.
